Debi's Design Diary DIY Paint Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ's

If you have a question that we didn't cover in our FAQ's just send us an email and we'll be happy to help!

Can you paint on laminate?

DIY Paint is specifically designed for furniture with no need for sanding or priming before you begin. It adheres to nearly any surface including metal, plastic, laminate, and glass.

Can you paint Upholstered Furniture?

You can absolutely paint upholstered furniture with chalk & clay paint. Tightly woven fabrics work best to paint, as they don't absorb as much of the product. Be sure to water down the paint. Watch my three part video tutorial for more help.

Can you paint on leather?

Yes. You can basically paint on anything.  It's a good idea to do a test first as sometimes there are preexisting factors that will effect the outcome.

What's the difference between DIY paint and other brands?

DIY Paint is a non toxic and all natural clay and chalk based paint. The clay is the magic ingredient which gives it the unique ability to create a variety of textures from smooth to chippy. DIY Paint is one of the most affordable brands on the market because it goes right from the factory to the retailer. It is also of the highest quality with the best pigments and ingredients possible. You can purchase DIY Paint from a retailer in your area or order from one of our online retailers.  DIY Paint prices online will always be the same.  Whether from an online retailer or directly from DIYPaint.co.

What is wet distressing?

Wet distressing is one of the most awesome things about DIY Paint! Because there is no latex or acrylic in our paint you can rub the paint back with a wet cloth or a wet sanding block.  Some folks even use a baby wipe.. What?...Well, why would you do that?  Why not just use sandpaper?

Sandpaper is good for some projects but rubbing the paint back gives you a more organic and authentic look, similar to when paint rubs off over time in most cases.

Sanding is a a lot of work and it's a dusty mess.  Rubbing paint off is much faster and dust free.

When you are working on something with fancy scroll work or fine detail sanding can damage the wood.  Wet distressing is the perfect alternative and a beautiful way to highlight the details in carved or ornate furniture.

How do I mix colors?

DIY Paint is water based and mixes like any other paint. When mixing, it is best to begin with your lighter shade and add small amounts of the darker shade, mixing until the desired color is attained.

How do I make a chalkboard?

Any color of DIY Paint can be used as the base of a chalkboard! The paint has a natural matte finish, so while colors like Weathered Wood or Letterpress Grey will give you the classic slate look, you can write with chalk and erase just as easily with any of the amazing colors. I recommend a smooth starting surface and at least three layers of DIY Paint applied with a satin finish roller to avoid brush strokes and texture. When the paint has dried thoroughly, use the side of a piece of chalk to "prime" the board by completely covering it evenly with a layer of chalk and erasing.
